I don’t have problems understanding definitions with this class, but I have a very big problem applying the definitions to the exam and homework. First, most of the questions are related to the U.S. political argument which I am not familiar with. In fact, I have been in the U.S. for less than one year. Second, due to the cultural and language difference, I often times do not understand the meaning of the question. For example, in quiz 3, negative or positive stereotypes of Bible Thumper, Radical Feminist and Fishmonger. I had to look through my dictionary to find the definition of those words and then make an assumption whether they are negative or positive stereotypes.
Maybe this example would help people better understand my circumstances. Peter can speak Chinese but he is not familiar with the Chinese culture. If I tell Peter “I have purchased a clock for you as a birthday present,” maybe Peter will feel so appreciative that I am kind to him. But in fact, giving a “clock” to someone in China is to tell that person to go to hell.
I feel so appreciative that our lecturer is encouraging students to talk about the problems they encounter with their homework. In fact, not many tutors are willing to do so. However, it doesn’t help me much because I have too many questions which are very difficult to express in written form. Anyway, I love this subject very much. It gives me so much valuable knowledge on how to observe arguments in the world.
猜不到肺腑之言賺來了不少掌聲, 人群壓力下, 老師亦回覆了另一篇她的肺腑之言給我.
thank you for that posting. It made me help understand you better and I'm sure the rest of the class feels the same way. I can sympathize with cultural differences very much, since I was born in Germany and did not come to this country until I was an adult, and I too consulted the dictionary for meanings of unfamiliar phrases many times. On the other hand, I love reading the dictionary and have always been eager to learn new and unfamiliar things. W.O. Quine, an American philosopher, and great logician, has argued that certain things are simply not translatable from one language to another. Symbolic logic is acutally great to overcome some of those difficulties, because it concentrates on form and not just content. Content, even within the same culture, is riddled with inherent ambiguities. A challange of a different kind. Keep up the good work everyone. We must always do the very best that we can. No other limits should be accepable.
you score on Q5 was not based upon what you got right, but how much effort you made. I posted Answers to Q5, please read that and then if you still have questions - do ask.
真係一個吹佢唔脹的答覆. 但是我已經說過 N 次, 我不是好吃的果子, 用9.9 秒時間打了回覆.
Now, I am even more confused about the email you wrote. You say “you score on Q5 was not based upon what you got right, but how much effort you made.”, so I wonder how did you evaluate the students' effort to determine scores.
後來她終於回了一個似人答的 EMAIL:
I will go over your score on Q5 in detail within the next few days. Thanks for your patience. In the mean time keep on working on the chapters. Additionally, I have a question for you: since you read my answers to Q5, what questions on Q5 did you get right?
看完簡直流冷汗, 這是說明她跟本沒有看我的卷就評分嗎?
5. 最近的兩個 CHAPTERS, 真的讀得心力交瘁, 我明明讀的是哲學, 為何好像讀 PURE MATHS 一樣. 我就COPY & PASTE 一個例子給大家欣想:
Q: The creation story in the Book of Genesis is compatible with the theory of evolution, but only if the creation story is not taken literally. If there is plenty of evidence for the theory of evolution, which there is, the Genesis story cannot be true if it is not compatible with evolution theory. Therefore, if the Genesis story is taken literally, it cannot be true.
ANS:
C= creation story, L = literally, E = evolution, T=true.
C à ~L
[Eà (~Cà ~T)] & E
Là ~T
This argument is Valid.
都是一些疑似數學又不是數學的課題, 當初我就是懶醒用對待數學方法對待他們, 結果考試 TOTAL LOST。
6. 以為出了一封肺腑之言給老師, 打後的考試題目會好過一點,BUT:
When he was Speaker of the House, Mr. Newt Gingrich could be counted on to advance Republican causes. At the time, nobody who would do that could be accused of being soft on crime, which explains why at the time Gingrich could hardly be accused of being soft on crime.
我呆了,直接張copy了這段給我一個熟識世界各地政治的好朋友波叔研究,波叔很熱心地跟我講解 Mr. Newt Gingrich 的背景,結果我的答案如下 :
C = accused of being soft on crime, S = Speaker of the House,
R = could be counted on to advance Republican causes.
All S are R
No R are C
Therefore No S are C
No rules break.
